The stars look very different today, thanks to this icon.

When he passed away on this day one year ago, David Bowie left behind a complex legacy — one that is as visual as it is musical. That legacy is carried on by those who pay homage to him by emulating his sense of style. His unique form of self-expression was so infectious, it’s no surprise that
his imitators are numerous.

They include some of the most top-tier celebrities active today. A few are particularly well known for their Bowie-inspired red carpet appearances. Lady Gaga memorably got into character for last year’s GRAMMY Awards, at which she also performed a rendition of some of Bowie’s best hits.

Tilda Swinton is frequently cited for being a Bowie look-alike. In fact, she was a personal friend of Bowie’s and even performed alongside him in the music video “The Stars (Are Out Tonight).” Whether the two artists resemble each other is one matter, but they both definitely shared a similarly androgynous
taste in fashion.

Sometimes the debt to Bowie is less straightforward. It’s not confirmed whether Kristen Stewart had the icon in mind when she struck a pose at this 2016 movie premiere. Let’s just say the Aladdin Sane makeup, the outfit reminiscent of the Thin White Duke, and her slick bleached tresses all point in the same general direction.

That’s to say nothing of the attitude. More than anything, that’s what celebs are channeling when they put on their best Bowie guise. His unbridled expressiveness, his willingness to explore alternative versions of himself, and his fascinatingly alien, other-worldly sensibilities have captured imaginations and will only continue to do so. — jas
