The spirit of the pioneering aviator is alive and well in fashion.

The world is buzzing with Amelia Earhart’s name due to the discovery of a photo that may prove she survived. The news is timely: this July 26 would have been her 120th birthday, and July 2 marked 80 years since the legendary disappearance of her and her plane.

The obscure event goes down as one of the biggest mysteries in the history of mankind. Fascination with the heroine and her fate has taken form in many ways, including on the catwalk.  Just last week, Dior sent a belted jumpsuit down the runway that was directly inspired by the pioneering pilot.

Just as she is remembered for being the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic, Amelia is also legendary for her progressive, tomboy sense of style and influential short cropped, tousled hair. It is still being disputed whether the newly discovered photo is actually proof of what became of her. What is indisputable is her powerful and enduring role in fashion. — jas
