Legend has it that a witch can change into a cat nine times.
The catch was, on the ninth time, she can’t change back. Hence the saying, “A cat has nine lives.” Back when witches were widely believed in and usually feared, this time of year came to be associated with them as well as their feline counterparts, supposedly because mid-August is a “yowly” time for cats.
To make a full disclaimer, our sole source for all of this is the Old Farmer’s Almanac. Far as we searched and deep as we delved, we couldn’t find the actual legend or legends in question. But according to the Almanac, traditionally, this period of time follows the better-known “Dog Days of Summer.” The fact that we couldn’t find any more information on the subject simply intrigued us more! So, we’ve decided to make a big deal out of it.
Cats, of course, are an important part of fashion. There are cat eye shades, cat eye makeup, cat motifs. We could go on — and we will! Starting today, we’re going to publish a series of nine posts inspired by Cat Nights. Kicking things off, here’s a selection of the latest and chicest cat eye shades that have been spotted on the red carpets and the sidewalks lately.
