Model Cara Delevingne rocking her platinum buzz cut at the MTV Movie and TV Awards in Los Angeles, California - May 7, 2017

Nothing this year embodied confidence and liberation like a buzzcut.

Those two values were indeed part of the message women conveyed this year as they shaved their heads, one after the other. Many went an extra step and dyed the micro-short strands that remained platinum blonde.

Of course, there are a handful of celebs who have long been proponents of the look, such as Michelle Williams, Tilda Swinton, and Scarlett Johansson. But 2017 was the year the statement became a movement.

The fashionable rallying cry spread like wildfire as high-profile celebs and stylish women all around the world dramatically chopped off their locks. Among the first of the new wave, Amandla Stenberg made the chop in January. Kristen Stewart followed in March, Katy Perry in April.

Cara Delevingne solidified the trend in May, explaining on Instagram, “It’s exhausting to be told what beauty should look like. I am tired of society defining beauty for us.”

“Freedom,” Kate Hudson captioned the Instagram shot of her newly shaved head on July 26.

Star of Stranger Things Millie Bobby Brown’s drastic haircut, with its dark backstory, gave an extra boost of momentum to the buzzcut movement. More than just a beauty statement, this year’s top hair trend was just as much about empowerment. You can’t hide behind a buzzcut. It’s a style that says, “I am what I am — deal with it.”

Fierce, fearless, and feminist, the showstopping cut is an inspiring highlight for which 2017 will be remembered. — jas
