This necklace ranks right up there in the list of Most Fashionable Plot Devices of All Time.

Not only does the heart shaped blue diamond necklace known as the “Heart of the Ocean” steal the show, style-wise, every time it appears onscreen in Titanic. It’s also central to the 1997 cinematic epic’s plot.

Crafted by London-based jewelers Asprey & Garrard, the piece was partly inspired by the Hope Diamond and of course immortalized in the scene when Leonardo DiCaprio’s character, Jack, draws a portrait of Rose (portrayed by Kate Winslet) wearing it and nothing else onboard the doomed passenger liner.

The gorgeous gem continues to capture the imagination of fashion lovers and designers. Just this past September, there were a notable number of pendant necklaces, some of which bore a striking resemblance to their famous antecedent.

Of course, a gleaming necklace never fails to make a statement on the red carpet. In honor of Titanic’s twentieth anniversary this December 19 and its 3D re-release, here’s a roundup of the most jaw-dropping jewels in recent celebrity history.

You have to wonder whether Bella Hadid had Titanic specifically in mind when she chose to drape Bulgari’s stunning 180-carat sapphire necklace around her neck for the 70th Cannes Film Festival. Gems can have the same high-caliber effect whether they’re blue like the legendary original or not, of course. Few have forgotten the 52.76 carat Chopard emerald Julia Roberts wore to Cannes the year before, for example.

Rubies, amethysts, and more precious stones are all capable of claiming a Titanic-worthy moment for themselves, as these celebs all demonstrate. — jas
