Can you spot the trick in each of these outfits?

Just in time for April Fool’s Day, designers have been getting creative with sartorial illusions. Designed to turn heads and make you do a double take, trompe l’oeil is an enduring technique dear to many designers including Comme des Garçons and Maison Margiela. Translated from French it literally means “fool the eye,” making trompe l’oeil looks especially appropriate for April first.

On the Spring 2018 catwalks, Thom Browne let loose creatively with sculptural pieces. Balenciaga and Issey Miyake released a series of life-like pastoral prints, while Junya Watanabe channelled mind-boggling optical illusions reminiscent of M.C. Escher. And if you really want to play with optics, look no farther than Dior’s Haute Couture catwalk. — jas
