It’s been about a year since Paris Jackson first burst onto the scene. After eighteen years spent by and large out of the megawatt limelight she was born in, she dazzled us all at the 2017 GRAMMYs in a sparkling Balmain dress topped by a shock of blonde waves. “Who is this?!” the fashion world collectively gasped.
When she designated part of her GRAMMYs speech to addressing the Dakota Access Pipeline protests, we realized that the daughter of Michael Jackson was not just the latest pretty face on the scene. She had a message to go along with her look.
A year later, Paris continues to strategically use her stardom — and her style — to make a positive impact on the world. We know quite a bit more about her fashion sense than we did twelve months ago. The dresses she picks out are sometimes quirky, sometimes edgy, and consistently full of life.
She was quickly recruited by Raf Simons to become the face of Calvin Klein. Her black Met Gala dress custom made by the house was surprisingly reserved, though it did have a slashed midriff to add interest to its rather boxy lines.
That refined, almost somber Met Gala number was a far cry from what Paris chose to wear to the MTV Movie & TV Awards just days later. Destroyed denim and a Michelle Obama tee made a great team along with broken-in Converse. A plaid top tied around her waist added a grunge vibe while braids kept the look light and carefree.
After those two back-to-back appearances, people didn’t know what to make of this new starlet. In the coming months, the picture became a little clearer. Paris confessed to Harper’s Bazaar that her favorite music was folksier than people might expect from the daughter of the Prince of Pop. As it turns out, her taste in fashion closely aligns with her taste in music.
Throughout 2017, she made further red carpet appearances, each more relaxed than the last. Somehow, she seemed much more comfortable in floral patterned dresses topped by loose, beachy waves. For the VMAs she even kicked off her Jimmy Choo sandals, opting to go barefoot in her sheer Dior dress.
And just since the beginning of 2018, her wardrobe has taken another confident leap forward. Stella McCartney’s platform Monster boots anchored one athletic look, while her Vanity Fair Oscars Party ensemble involved a bejeweled, light green Versace creation.
It’s clear that Paris has quickly gotten a grasp for how best to be herself while absolutely owning the spotlight. Celebrating her 20th birthday this April 3, she’ll no doubt continue to surprise us with her thrilling fashion statements. — jas
