Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan on the set of The Great Gatsby - 2013 Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan on the set of The Great Gatsby - 2013

Five years after the release of Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby, ’20s style is trending stronger than ever.

Who didn’t get bit by the flapper bug after seeing Carey Mulligan’s Prada dress embellished with Tiffany crystals? Playing Daisy Buchanan from the classic novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald opposite Leonardo DiCaprio as the dapper Jay Gatsby, she stole our hearts in the 2013 film with her glitzy wardrobe and chic blonde bob.

Half a decade later, feathers and fringe have secured a place for themselves on contemporary red carpets, along with beading, embroidery, and other 1920s embellishments.

Luhrmann’s 3D spectacle was set to a Jay-Z soundtrack and put its own stamp on the Jazz Age aesthetic, glazing it with a 21st Century sheen. Cast in pure Arts & Crafts flair, the film brushed away any tarnish and set the era aglow for a new generation.

And no one can watch Luhrmann’s party scenes without wishing for an exclusive invite to one of Gatsby’s shindigs. More than anything, it would be an excuse to slip on your own flapper dress (you know you have one!) and really let loose. Time for a 1920s-themed party, anyone?

Look to Cara Delevingne, Zendaya, Evan Rachel Wood, and more stars for razzmatazz cues. In some cases, these fashionistas have gone so far as to chop off their locks and set them in gleaming retro waves. — jas
