In 2017, red was right on! Shall we try for three out of three?

Each year there’s a single, joyful hue that seems to radiate more than any other on the red carpets and really embody what the Cannes Film Festival is all about. Namely, carefree, effortless fashion in the tropical Mediterranean.

For a couple of years in a row, canary yellow stole the show, thanks mainly to Uma Thurman and Charlize Theron.

On a whim, we suggested that red might be a stylish usurper last year, and wow were we right!

Well ok, we weren’t just going out on a limb. Red has made its fair share of show-stopping statements in previous years, too. But celebs really did pull out all the stops to make the fiery shade a winner in 2017.

So what will it be this year? This might be a bit of a long shot, but our money’s on purple.

We’ll even go so far as to pinpoint an exact shade: Ultra Violet, the official color of 2018. Pantone’s endorsement counts for a lot, of course. Then there’s the fact that, while the hue has been relatively scarce both at Cannes and in general, its rarity only makes solid purple that much more astounding when it does appear.

Regal and luxurious, this rich shade is also quite lighthearted and optimistic, making it a perfect match for the South of France’s premiere film festival. We’re looking forward to May’s burst of paradisiacal fashion. Let’s see whether our prediction comes true and purple pulls through. — jas
