Stars broke out their crowns, veils, and royal trains for this year’s Met Gala.

It was anyone’s guess how celebs would interpret this year’s theme of “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination” at the year’s most high profile costume ball. A good guess, as it turns out, would have been a baroque take on medieval fashion. With ornate embroidery, intricate beading, and period accessories, attendees from Rihanna to Cardi B brought the Middle Ages back to life with outfits that ranged from the regal to the divine.

Blake Lively and Sarah Jessica Parker went all out with unbelievably elaborate gowns trailing dramatic trains. Others like Madonna and Mindy Kaling topped off Old World dresses with crowns worthy of true queens. Taking a different route, Zendaya wowed in Joan-of-Arc-style armor hewn by Saint Laurent.

Veils and headdresses added evocative charm to other ensembles. Metallic mesh graced Olivia Munn and Priyanka Chopra’s flawless tresses, while Kate Bosworth looked princess-like under gauzy tulle trimmed with pearls. — jas
