There is on earth, at any rate, thanks in part to the current David Bowie-style technicolor suit trend.
The fashion icon’s hit single “Life on Mars” was released 45 years ago on June 22. The accompanying music video cemented Bowie’s image as a shapeshifting chameleon and placed him on the vanguard of a new wave of androgyny unlike anything that had been seen before. The aesthetic was redefined by the clip’s bright makeup, spiky Ziggy Stardust hair, and especially his preternaturally glowing, powder blue suit.
The marvelously clashing look is still awe-striking today, to say nothing of how shocking it was in 1973. In honor of its anniversary, here’s a roundup of vivid, gender-bending suits from the sidewalks and the red carpets that recall “Life on Mars,” as well as the many vibrant suits employed by the late, great Bowie throughout his landmark career. — jas
