In time to mark Coco Chanel’s 135th birthday on August 19, Karl Lagerfeld has taken the brand back to its roots.

The designer’s Cruise 2019 collection is alive with the spirit of the house’s founder. With a life-size model of a cruise liner as a backdrop, the collection referred again and again to “La Pausa,” Chanel’s vacation home on the French Riviera.

Appearing on classy items that Chanel herself would no doubt have approved of, the motif was an endearing one that added depth to the airy show, transforming it from an offering to an homage.

Certain pieces, including the white berets that topped many outfits, were direct nods to the iconic designer — as tasteful, understated, and chic as it gets. If Chanel followers are looking for a fresh way to channel their heroine, Lagerfeld has given them just what they need. — jas
