From head to toe, here are the biggest runway trends that everyone will be wearing this fall.

There’s a lot of overlap and many fall under the broad umbrella of the current 1980s revival. Some references are oblique, such as the structured shoulders takeover. Others are more direct, like the one-shouldered outfits that take their inspiration from Jennifer Beals in 1983’s Flashdance.

Overall, the Fall 2018 runways combine into a giant blur of colors and prints that deliberately clash. This, too, is a tip of the hat to the sort of devil-may-care rule breaking that defined the ’80s. The dramatic decade was all about excess and exaggeration. Welcome to the era of exaggerated excess! That’s the message this season.

Of course, there are also undercurrents that are unmistakably contemporary. The raging clear plastic trend is going nowhere for Fall 2018 as far as the catwalks are concerned — in fact, it’s going to blow up like never before. There’s also a big cover up going on. By that we mean hoods, head scarves, and hijabs — chic head coverings in every form.

Fresh takes on classic staples include unbelievably buttery leather, a smattering of dark floral prints, and lush shades of deep burgundy and brilliant turquoise. Together, all these options are here to fill in the gaps of your autumn wardrobe. — jas
